GTA REALTORS® Working With Elected Representatives to Create Affordable Housing

TORONTO, December 2, 2011 -- Greater Toronto REALTORS® are being joined by local politicians in making the dream of home ownership a reality for one local family.

Greater Toronto REALTORS® are taking part in the construction of a Habitat for Humanity home that the Toronto Real Estate Board (TREB) sponsored. On December 2, 2011 at 2:00 p.m., the Hon. Margaret Best, Minister of Consumer Services and M.P.P. for Scarborough-Guildwood will join REALTORS® in their Habitat for Humanity build. The Hon. John Mckay, M.P. for Scarborough-Guildwood will join REALTORS® in the build on December 9, 2011 at 10:30 a.m.

Located within Minister Best’s and Mr. McKay’s riding of Scarborough-Guildwood, at 4572 Kingston Road, near Morningside Avenue, the home marks the fourth title sponsorship of seven Habitat for Humanity builds to which TREB has contributed in recent years.

“Working with elected officials, at all levels, to find ways to create affordable housing so that as many people as possible can achieve the dream of home ownership has always been a priority for REALTORS®. Usually, our affordable housing work with governments involves providing valuable input on policies and legislation; this time, our work together may be a bit harder on our backs as we pick up hammers, paint brushes, and shovels to get the job done,” said Richard Silver, President of the Toronto Real Estate Board.

REALTORS® strongly support efforts, by all levels of government, to ensure an adequate supply of affordable housing.

“REALTORS® are supporting Habitat for Humanity because they share our belief in the importance of affordable home ownership. Building this home will make the dream of home ownership a reality for one family. Working together, with governments at all levels, we can continue to make affordable home ownership a reality for as many people as possible,” said Silver.

Each year, TREB Members help to improve the overall quality-of-life in the GTA by supporting shelter-related charities through the REALTORS® Care Foundation. Last year, it offered grants totalling more than $178,000 to 35 different organizations throughout the GTA.

“This new home will stand as symbol of the sheer determination and partnerships within our communities. Together, we are making affordable housing a reality for one local family. This accomplishment is a great example of what we can achieve, one home at a time, through our collective strengths,” said Minister Best.

“Habitat for Humanity Toronto is a wonderful organization with a simple mission: helping low-income families achieve the dream of home ownership. I am very pleased to have this new community in my riding of Scarborough-Guildwood. Congratulations to the new homeowners and thank you to TREB for being part of this fantastic project,” said McKay.
