TRREB’s East GRC Working Group addresses real estate and housing issues that affect REALTORS® and residents in Durham Region. The group recently met to review key regional updates, focusing on nuclear energy investments and job creation that will strengthen the housing market and local economy.

Small Modular Nuclear Reactors at the Darlington Plant

The group is encouraged by the joint federal and provincial historic investment of $3 billion in small modular nuclear reactors (SMRs) at Darlington, one of Canada’s first five national building projects. Led by Ontario Power Generation, the project will build four SMRs generating 1,200 MW of clean energy, enough to power 1.2 million homes. With a total budget of $20.9 billion, this initiative is expected to contribute up to $38.5 billion to Canada’s GDP over 65 years.

SMRs will deliver reliable, low-carbon power to support new residential growth, reduce energy costs, and help Durham achieve its goal of building more than 50,000 new homes by 2031.

This flagship initiative will reduce energy-grid constraints, position Canada a leader in nuclear energy production, create thousands of local jobs, accelerate attainable housing while maintaining community standards, and support Canada’s net-zero target by 2050.

TRREB remains committed to supporting energy-enabled housing across Durham Region municipalities by continuing to engage with policymakers and collaborating with the Central Lakes Association of REALTORS® to offer data-driven recommendations.
