TRREB’s Housing Affordability GRC Working Group recently hosted a roundtable discussion focused on innovative multiplex housing design and explored practical solutions to the ongoing housing crisis.

The presentation highlighted a completed fourplex ownership model that demonstrates how thoughtfully designed multiplexes can optimize underutilized lots, streamline design, and increase density while maintaining livability and neighbourhood character. It also showed how multiplex housing can improve affordability across Toronto as a scalable and efficient solution. When developers prioritize ownership over rentals, they create larger, more liveable layouts and give individuals and families a more attainable path to homeownership for individuals and families.

Working Group Members discussed policy issues, zoning flexibility, and faster approvals that could help ownership multiplexes expand more broadly. Moving forward, the working group will advocate for actions that policymakers and industry partners can take to make small-scale multiplex ownership more feasible and affordable across the region.

TRREB will continue to support innovative housing solutions and collaborate with industry leaders and policymakers to advance multiplexes and missing middle housing across the region.
